Interview with DeathStar

DeathStar is not only a talented MC from Johannesburg, he is also a gifted music Producer and has been in the true Underground Hip Hop Scene for many years. He is also a member of DSR (Darkstarz Records).

Nahila S – How and when did you start MCing?

DeathStar – I found something outside of myself to keep me going, started with writing in 2003 and released my first track in 2007, I rapidly dug into the history of hip hop wanting to be the greatest

Nahila S – Where does the name DeathStar come from?

DeathStar – I never liked the name, but it was the name I used in “Against Us” so I kept it

Nahila S – Who or what were your early influences?

DeathStar – Slim shady, and Jedi mind were my earliest mentors

Nahila S – You are a member of the collective DSR how did this all start and could you define DSR in one line?

DeathStar – I connected with smarts gorgeous a feature in 2013 for a track “Gore Wizard” he spoke to Gee then Gee hit me up and we all did the track together then he brought me onboard

FIRE!!!!

Nahila S – In 2015, you dropped the EP “Schizophrenia” (after “Sex with Zombies” EP in 2013), raw dark lyrics, sharpened rhymes, what does this EP represent for you?

DeathStar – I went through some dark times, music business was driving me insane, plus I started elevating lyrically, I drew the project to a close 4 tracks short because I was no longer there, personally I dislike the project Sex With Zombies still me favorite work.

Nahila S – Define “Schizophrenia”EP in few words?

DeathStar – WHITE PEOPLE PROBLEMS!

Nahila S – The upcoming one is called “Beautiful Me”, when is it dropping? Can you tell us a bit about it?

DeathStar – Yeah, EXCITED AS FUCK!, it should be out late January or Early February, it’s in mastering now, the support has been crazy, it’s definitely my best unreleased work, Beats and Songs, it’s a variety from me, which I never really give, I open up more on my personal life too, lookout for “Broken Down (Prod. Bar Code), it started on the evening I relapsed in JULY 2015, I recorded a track and called it Blessed these bars I got artwork for the single, saw the artwork and I said, that describes me, the music flowed and here we are.

Nahila S – What is your vision about the Hip Hop scene?

DeathStar – The Hip Hop scene is too easily accessible to wack trolling punks who need to learn their place.

Nahila S – What does your passion for Hip Hop brings you?

DeathStar – My passion used to bring me complete joy and a comfortyable isolation, nowadays just disappointment but working on that.

Nahila S – What are your upcoming projects?

DeathStar – I have no further projects in the works after Beautiful ME, I’ll be working on my private life and see what happens from there, really uninspired

Nahila S – As a conclusion, what message would you like to pass on to someone willing to start MCing?

DeathStar – Beat me and you have a chance.
