I had the pleasure to meet VoDoo in Paris and really did want to make an interview with him cause he has got a lot of talent and he is a wonderful musician. This interview is both offered to our readers of the International Underground Rap and Hip Hop connexion, in French and English also.

Interview realized and translated by Isa Nahila S Bigini

ENGLISH VERSION
***************

Nahila S – How and when did you start MCing?

VoDoo – My passion for MCing comes from a very long time ago. I was rocked by a lot of different styles of music. At the time I was living in Paris and there were a lot of concerts. The revelation for me was in 1995 during a 2Bal 2Neg concert in the Key (in the department 78 France) followed by the concert of the Fugees in Paris Zenith show place. Since then I started writing and composing more seriously, then came also the first parties, the adrenaline et the freedom that all that brings up and I decided to keep going.

Nahila S – Where does the name VoDoo come from?

VoDoo – The name VÖDOO comes out from my own imagination. Being from Haiti origins I wanted to find a name that was linked to my island and this name was mysterious enough and with a magical touch, this was perfect. On top of that for me the “voodoo” is not a bad sign it is at the contrary as I like to say it “VÖDOO is Love”.

Nahila S – Who or what were your early musical influences?

VoDoo – My first musical influences were determining for my path. Very early I knew how to play guitar (I learned on my own) and this considerably sharpened my ear. At home we were listening to Brassens and Ferrat and also to Bob Marley, I was very young and I still remember this single from Chuck Berry “Johnny be Good” that was turning all day long.
Then as a teenage my discovery with rap music and soul was for me some really marvelous (French and US hip hop). Groups such as Pharcyde and people such as Guru, MC Solaar and ATK influenced me a lot.

Nahila S – You arrived from Haiti to France at the age of 1 and I do know that last year you travelled to your haitian roots. Can you tell us about this trip and explain if it has any influence on the new sounds you are currently working on?

VoDoo – This travel has been for me “THE Travel”! After 33 years of exile I could see back my land and this happened in a very surprising way. As in a dream. Indeed the elaboration of my album was made in an epic way and this is thanks to the sale of my EP “Talisman” that I could finance my trip. A bit as if all this was written. There I met amazing people, felt a fabulous energy, a beautiful landscape and a joy of living that beats it all!

To conclude about this story I think I will write a book or make a movie about it because it was unique and it proves that we can realize one dream.

About the new sounds am working on, I think I will use more and more my guitar now.. I got this revelation during my trip there and I think that it is time for me to show up my public my guitarist side.

Nahila S – You are from the South of France, how is the Hip Hop scene out there?

VoDoo – Yes I live in Perpignan in the South of France and this is a beautiful part of the country. Rap music develops little by little as well as the urban culture in general. The South stays for me the keeper of a peculiar artistic knowledge, that might be due to the climax even though social conditions are not really good for us all in here. This proximity from the sea is maybe an element.

I like to quote one of Oxmo Puccino’s punchline “t’as pas saisis enleve la mer de la cote d’azur” ( which means roughly “you don’t get it take off the sea out of the Azur Coast”)

Nahila S – You participate into the MLK Fundation project (All United 4 Our Children – Project dedicated to the Orphanage of Bamako in Mali) How did this all start and what did motivate you?

VoDoo – The MLK Fundation is an association with which I entirely subscribe. Indeed I met its members about 3 years ago now and the aim is to help the children from an ophanage. Having myself an atypical path, this combination was for me natural. It keeps on and I set up a project called “Talisman Operation” that consisted in giving out 10% of the sales from my EP to the kids out there.
These projects were very gratifying and helping out the kids shall be a duty. Some new initiatives shall be taken within 2016 – 2017.

Nahila S – What does your passion for music bring you?

VoDoo – Ma passion for music is essential for me, it enabled me to surpass myself, to meet people from different cultures, to travel and to improve my knowledge. Music is for me an escape door and at the same time a space of freedom which feeds me.

Nahila S – To date what are your best personal or professional achievements?

VoDoo – To date professionally talking my best achievement is my EP “Talisman” and the video clip “Talisman”, these are my most completed of my realizations. From a personal point of view my biggest satisfaction is to realize each day how lucky I am and how much I still do have to work with determination and humility.

Nahila S – After the Talisman EP what are your future projects?

VoDoo – In the future I prepare my second EP that shall be dropped within 2016 and I have also a lot of projects such as making an Hip Hop/Soul album integrating guitar within it and as I said to you before also one of my goals is to tell this story of mine in a book and movie and transmit this energy, testify of this story.. my story.

On top of that I keep on meeting some professionals who are interested in what am doing so this is of good omen. To follow.. 2016 will be constructive.

Nahila S – As a conclusion, what message or advice would you like to pass on to someone willing to start MCing today?

VoDoo – I have no advice to give to no one but do your best, do it with your heart and go to the end of your dreams.
